Paddleball

The sport of paddleball is played with a wooden paddle and a rubber ball against a solid wall. There are 2 major variations for the sport 1 Wall Paddleball and 4 Wall Paddleball.

ONE WALL PADDLEBALL

History: Irish Immigrants brought a game to America called handball in the 1850's. Due to the cold weather in upstate NY, the players carved wooden paddles to hit the ball with in order to relieve the hand pain from the cold hard balls. Thus began the game of Paddleball.

The Game: Singles or doubles. Played against one wall. Points per game can be 11,15,21 and 25. This game is faster than any other paddle game.

The Court: The wall is 16' in height from the bottom to top edge of the boundary line. The width is 20 feet from the outside edge on the right boundary line to the outside edge of the left boundary line. Short line is 16 feet from the wall. Long line is 34 feet from the wall. Sidelines customarily run 37 feet.

The ball is made of rubber, blue or green in color 1 7/8 of an inch in diameter and very bouncy.

The Paddle: 18" in length and 8.25" wide. Specifications have recently been established by the NPA (1 Wall). Traditionally made out of wood with holes and metal rim. Graphite paddles are rapidly becoming popular in this sport.

One Wall Paddleball is strong in the cities of the NE United States, particularly New York, New Jersey, Philadelphia and Boston, but also in CA, FL and Puerto Rico. This sport has doubled its growth in just one year, the Paddleball.com Web Sites a pivotal role in the dissemination of information for the sport. There are over 10,000 Paddleball Courts concentrated in the New York City Metropolitan area.


FOUR WALL PADDLEBALL

History: Created at the University of Michigan in 1930 by Earl Riskey, a PE instructor, to enable paddleball to be played inside and played mainly in MI,WI, PA, Ohio and FL, in racquetball courts in winter months.

The Game: Played by 2,3 or 4 players to 21 points. First two won make a match.

The Court: Four-wall court. 20'x40', 20' high back wall at least 12'. Normally played indoors in racquetball courts.

The Ball: Penn 100 balls (similar to a racquetball), with a small pinhole/valve. Black in color, the bounce should be no more than 3.5ft. when dropped from 6ft.

The Paddle: Rimless, solid rock maple; restrictions and specifications enforced by the NPA (4 Wall)

Other Paddle Sports

Platform Tennis is a winter sport, primarily played in the Northeast, from Maine to Virginia, in the midwest from Ohio to Montana and Canada. The sport is played mostly in tennis clubs and private courts.
Paddle Tennis is an all year round sport played mostly in California, New York, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Connecticut, Illinois, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Arizona, Minnesota, Nevada, New Jersey, North Dakota, Texas, Virginia, Vermont and also in Mexico, Hawaii, Japan, Philippines and other Asian and European countries. Padel is played by 6.5 Million players in Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Ecuador, Mexico, Paraguay, Spain, France, Italy, Belgium, Great Britain, Holland, Australia, South Africa, and Canada.
